I was a Monkees fan. The Monkees TV show aired from 1966 to 1968 (I turned 9 in November of 1966). The show was crazy and funny. But the music was catchy and iconic and long outlived the show.
The Monkees were a band first conceived by TV producers. That didn’t matter then -- and it doesn’t matter now. Of the four Monkees, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith, only Dolenz survives. Jones died in 2012 and Tork in 2019. Michael Nesmith passed away on December 10, 2021.
All of The Monkees appeared on-screen using their real names. But Nesmith’s character as originally conceived by show producers did not, at first, have a name. He was simply called, “Wool Hat.”
