Will You KNOW When You've Finally Arrived?

When it comes to long-term projects and goals, I am big on using calendars and written objectives to keep me on track and on time. When constructing a timeline, S.A.M. is an acronym I use to remind me of the three qualities of a good goal.

A good goal is always specific, attainable, and measurable.

Specific means the goal has a start date and its achievement is clearly defined, in writing, with the end in mind. It does not mean that the goal is written in stone. The desired achievement may be flexible and, if needed, revised along the way.

Attainable means the goal is something that actually could be accomplished within a given period of time by the goal setter. It does not mean that the accomplishment is easy or simple. Speaking metaphorically, we reach for the stars in the sky rather than wait for them to fall.

Measurable means there are steps to be taken and decisions to be made in order to reach the goal. Progress and success are determined by working through these steps. Measurable does not mean the path to success is a straight one. There will be twists, turns, deviations and surprises along the way.

Are your goals clear and well-defined? Will you know when you're lagging? And will you know without a doubt when you've finally arrived?
