DAY 29 - Back to the Drawing Board, For My Granddaughter

A month or so prior to the birth of our first granddaughter, family and friends got together to host a baby shower for our daughter. The theme was forest animals and the room, tables, and refreshments were all appropriately decorated. The day of the event my job was just to be there and help set up. But prior to that, I had a different responsibility: I was to help DESIGN elements of the actual shower invitation.

It had been decided that the invite would be a colorful, 3D cardstock and cut-paper project. The work involved creating a featured animal and a few forest elements. After lots of folding, cutting and trimming, everything would be glued together. Every invite had to be individually assembled and then mailed (on time). Once the design was done, my wife worked out an assembly line process. The whole project ended up being a lot of fun, and my reward was that I got to be part of welcoming a new member to our family.

This sketch has special meaning.

This little deer sketch was the foundation for one of several elements that were created just for the shower. But it also became the idea behind a special gift.

At the time of their birth, my wife and I have given each grandchild a soft, stuffed plush toy or animal. Each gift has been unique to the child with its own "thought" behind it. Of our seven grandkids, none has received the same toy.

This fawn sketch, drawn for the shower, lead my wife and I to find the little deer that became the birth gift for our own dear "first" granddaughter.
