30 Days in September Recap

Today is Monday, the 2nd of October.

Tuesday, September 5th was my first day self-employed. That means tomorrow it will be exactly 4 weeks since I started down this road of exploring creative options for starting a new business.

At my wife's encouragement, I've spent most of this time thinking about what I've learned and done over the last 40 years and then all the possibilities for using those experiences to do something new.

In the last couple of weeks, I've begun narrowing my focus. I posted articles September 20-21 about these guys I know who are pursuing a dream to create their own comics. I admire them because they represent a small biz effort in a big industry, they set aside time every day to do the work, and because they're not afraid to put themselves out there where others can see.

In the process of writing the articles, I noticed that "why people do what they do" is for me a recurring theme. So, I scheduled interviews with a few more small business and startup owners:

  • An entrepreneur who went straight from college to owning her own bakery.
  • A stay-at-home dad who creates role-playing game systems.
  • A fireman who is a part-time ventriloquist.
  • A podcaster turned documentarian.
  • Plus a few more!

These are people I know or know of, who are doing something on a small scale simply because they want to. And by small, I mean really small. These folks don't come close to meeting the SBA's qualifications for owning a (technically speaking) small business. They haven't made millions. They don't have paid help (or at best, not much).

Which makes the question, "Why do this?" all the more important!

Their answers fascinate me. I'll be posting these interviews on Tuesday's and Wednesday's beginning the week of Monday, October 9th. That's next week. I hope you'll follow along.
