I'm a goal setter. I have been for the better part of the last 35 years, ever since college. That's when I was first introduced to Strategy for Living: How to Make the Best Use of Your Time and Abilities by Edward R. Dayton and Ted W. Engstrom (more about that some other time).
In order to achieve something within a reasonable period of time, I take a few days at the end of one year and the start of the next to map the necessary steps. And then I work the plan.
Some would say that I've accomplished a bit in life (though not always strictly for money). But please understand that I don't always accomplish what I set out to do. I've also found that sometimes what I accomplished wasn't really all that important. And I realize now, too, that not all my goals have been a good reflection of who I am or what I'm capable of doing. I think best-selling author and blogger Michael Hyatt would say that I've been both a Drifter and (sometimes, more often than not) Driven in my life and success.
I'm actually in the mapping and planning phase for 2016 right now, this week, and I know I need a change -- in my thinking first and then in my day-to-day actions and decisions. So this time around I'm working on a new strategy for determining the goals that are right for me. As part of my "rethinking" I'll be working to answer the questions posed by Hyatt at his 5 Days to Your Best Year Ever website.
First up: How DO I want to be remembered?
